TROY, Alabama – The Troy soccer team fell to South Alabama in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1, in double overtime at the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Â
The Trojans (4-8-2, 2-3 Sun Belt) jumped out to an early lead in the 24th minute. Kiersten Edlund lofted a free kick into the penalty area where it was met by Qarli Stone, who headed it towards goal. The ball bounced off the far post but Maddie Brune was there to tap it in for her second score of the season.
Â
It took league-leading South Alabama (7-4-1, 5-0) just under two minutes to respond. Deanna Green's throw in near the Trojans box found Rio Hardy, who turned on her defender and fired a shot into the side netting.
Â
The game moved to the second overtime where Tiina Trusti's shot rebounded off the post and into the path of Hardy, who put it away for the game-winner.
Â
QUOTABLE
"To lose in the manner that we did so close to the end of the game is a little soul-destroying for our players, but you lose some and you win some," Troy head coach Ged O'Connor said. "Our team shape was excellent, our work rate was excellent … for us to play the way we did against a very good team, I can't have anything but positive things to say about the way we played and our players."
Â
UP NEXT
The Trojans return to Sun Belt action on Oct. 6 when the team hosts Little Rock in the second game of a four-game homestand.
Â
NOTEWORTHY

Â
• The Trojans have played four overtime games this season, second-most in the league behind Appalachian State's five.
