CONWAY, S.C. – The Troy Soccer team led for 78 minutes but saw its advantage suddenly evaporate in the final minute before falling in double overtime, 2-1, to Coastal Carolina at CCU Soccer Stadium on Friday.
With just 59 seconds to play, Mackenzie Gibbs blasted a shot from 25 yards out that zipped past Troy goalkeeper Mikki Lewis' outstretched hands and found the top corner to tie the game. The Chanticleers (7-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) got the game winner in the second overtime period when Daniella Famili collected a rebound off the crossbar and poked in home to end the game.
Troy (3-7-2, 1-2) got its goal in the 12th minute when Amber Harless' cross deflected in the box and out to Maddie Brune. Brune then passed it off to Lauren Aldrich, who served a pass that found the head of Julia Winter where she lofted a header past the keeper. Of Winter's four
QUOTABLE
"Despite the loss, I am very pleased with the way we played," head coach Ged O'Connor said. "Maximum effort is the minimum standard and sometimes you don't get the results you think you should get. I was extremely proud of the way our girls competed and especially the way the girls on the sidelines supported their teammates."
