TROY, Alabama - The Troy soccer team wrapped up its first week of practice under first year head coach Ged O'Connor on Friday.
With 11 newcomers joining 18 veterans on this year's squad, the team is looking to mesh quickly.
"Because we have a short time to prepare, making every rep count is crucial," said sophomore midfielder Maddie Brune. "There are a lot of new people coming in, we have to make sure that we are all playing together in a timely manner."
O'Connor joined the program in January after 11 seasons at the helm at Saint Leo University in Tampa, Fla. Since taking over, the England native has pressed keeping high standards.
"We want each player to do the work that they expect from the person next do them," he said. "We have set high standards that all of our players know we expect them to achieve."
The Trojans stumbled to a 7-10-3 mark in 2016 before head coach Jason Hamilton departed for Mississippi State to become the program's associate head coach. Troy graduated four seniors but returns three-year starting goalkeeper Mikki Lewis, two-year starter Haley Roberson as well as the defensive anchors in Brune and center back Nicole Strahl. The team's 1.08 goals against average was the fourth-best in school history, while Lewis enters the season just two wins shy of surpassing Ashley Branham's record mark of 35 career wins.
Troy opens the 2017 regular season on Aug. 12 at South Florida. The team plays its home opener on Aug. 18 against Mercer at 7 p.m.
