TROY, Alabama – Troy soccer will play seven home games in 2017 including an Oct. 1 tilt against Sun Belt rival South Alabama as head coach Ged O'Connor announced the Trojans' slate on Monday.
"I think we've put together a challenging schedule, one that will test the team from start to finish," head coach Ged O'Connor said. "Our non-conference games are tough and will hopefully prepare our players for a very difficult Sun Belt schedule."
Troy will take on Sunshine State powers Florida (Aug. 20) and Florida State (Sept. 12) on the road as well as in-state foe Alabama (Sept. 3) in Mobile as part of the Jaguar Classic. The matchup with Florida will be the first ever between the programs while Troy and then-No. 1 Florida State squared off last season – a 1-0 FSU win in overtime. The Trojans open the season on the road against South Florida (Aug. 11) before hosting Mercer (Aug. 18) in the team's home opener. The only other non-conference home game will take place on Aug. 25 against Murray State.
Included in the traditional Sun Belt Conference schedule are home games against ULM (Sept. 15), Little Rock (Oct. 6), Georgia Southern (Oct. 8) and Georgia State (Oct. 13).
Coming off a 7-10-3 (3-5-2 Sun Belt) campaign in 2016, the Trojans will join the fray under the leadership of O'Connor, who enters his first season at the helm. The team returns 18 letterwinners and five starters, including two-time All-Sun Belt selections in goalkeeper Mikki Lewis and defender Haley Roberson. Lewis will start the season just two wins shy of breaking the program's career record of 35 set by Ashley Branham (2008-11).
