Â
SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – For the second time in three years, a Troy men's golfer will compete as an individual at the NCAA Championship when Cam Norman opens play Friday at Rich Harvest Farms.
Â
Norman earned his spot in the championship field after finishing as the top individual on a non-qualifying team in the NCAA College Grove Regional last week. The Greenville, Ala., native tied for sixth place overall with a 3-under 213 and finished two shots ahead of Middle Tennessee's Marcus Byrd for the individual spot.
Â
He begins his quest for a national championship at 8:57 a.m. Friday as he tees off with Illinois State's Trent Wallace and Arkansas' Mason Overstreet on No. 1. Norman will switch to the afternoon wave for Saturday's second round as his pairing will open on No. 10 at 2:17 p.m.
Â
The top 15 teams and the top nine individuals following 54 holes of play will advance to play one additional round on Monday. The individual national champion will be crowned following Monday's round, while the top eight teams will advance to match play.
Â
Norman opened the Regional with a 5-under 67 as he carded eight birdies in the round – the second most in the field – to go along with eight pars, one bogey and one double-bogey. With Troy starting on the back nine, Norman raced to 4-under with four birdies before making the turn. He capped a run of three-straight birdies with red numbers on his first two holes after making the turn.
Â
A wicked par-3 was responsible for his first bogey of the day, but he quickly responded with a birdie two holes later. After finding the water on No. 6, Norman closed out the day with a birdie on No. 9.
Â
Weather conditions worsened as the week went on and Norman shot a 1-over 73 in each of the final two rounds. He finished the 54-hole event with 14 birdies – the third-most in the field – and one eagle.
Â
Norman enters the NCAA Championship with a 73.06 stroke average on the season and a +1.42 score vs. par for the year. He tied for the Troy team lead with six rounds in the 60s on the year and finished third among the Trojans with 10 rounds under par.
Â
Tolver Dozier competed in the 2015 NCAA Championship as an individual for Troy after claiming the spot with a dramatic eagle on the first playoff hole.
Â
Quotable – Head Coach Matt Terry
"Cam has played his way into the most exclusive field of collegiate golfers and that is an amazing accomplishment. He came here with the goal to a national championship and that is what our focus will be on all weekend. We learned a lot about how to compete at the NCAA Championship from Tolver Dozier's appearance two seasons ago and hopefully those lessons coupled with Cam's ability on the golf course will lead to a successful tournament."
