SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – Troy senior Cam Norman went toe-to-toe with the nation's top collegiate golfers during Friday's opening round of the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms. Norman carded five birdies and shot a 2-under 70 to sit tied for 13th place overall after 18 holes; not all teams finished the round as play was suspended due to darkness following a lengthy rain delay.
The top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on those 15 teams following 54 holes of play will advance to play one additional round on Monday. The individual national champion will be crowned following Monday's round, while the top eight teams will advance to match play.
The Greenville, Ala., native opened his round with three straight pars before a birdie on the 458-yard, par-4 No. 4. After two more pars, Norman bogeyed the 562-yard, par-5 No. 7 to get back even, which is how he made the turn.
"I was pretty calm besides the first tee shot with so many people watching me," Norman said. "I was also a littler calmer throughout the day because I didn't feel the pressure of letting my team down since I was playing as an individual. It was definitely different not having my teammates around and I missed them, but playing the practice round with the guys I played with today helped."
Norman opened the back nine with four birdies on his first six holes, jumpstarted by a two-hopper from the bunker on the par-4 No. 10. He shot to 2-under with a birdie on the par-5 No. 11 and eventually reached 4-under after birdies on No. 14 and No. 15.
"I was putting really well today and that helped my confidence as the round went on," Norman said. "Coach (Matt) Terry and I did a good job picking spots on the greens to attack and I think we did that well all day."
However, a tough 205-yard, par-3 No. 16 and the par-5 18th both turned into bogeys for Norman who turned in his 11th round under par this season. He opened with a 5-under 67 at the NCAA College Grove Regional where he went on to shoot a 3-under 213 for the tournament and tie for sixth to earn the spot in the NCAA Championship.
Norman's grouping will be in the afternoon wave for Saturday's second round with a scheduled tee time of 2:17 p.m. off No. 10.
