COLLEGE GROVE, Tennessee – For the second time in three years, a Troy men's golfer has qualified as an individual for the NCAA Championship as Cam Norman shot a 3-under 213 and tied for sixth place overall at the NCAA College Grove Regional which concluded Wednesday at The Grove. Troy finished in sixth place as a team only one spot out of qualifying position.
Norman shot a 1-over 73 in Wednesday's final round in the worst conditions of the week as the wind was a constant 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.
After a bogey to open the day, Norman rolled a 51-footer for eagle on No. 2 to set the tone for the rest of the round. The native of Greenville, Ala., made the turn even after two more bogeys and then a chip-in birdie on No. 8. Three bogeys around a birdie on No. 14 pushed his card to 2-over, but a nice up-and-down out of the front bunker on No. 18 led to a birdie to close the day.
Norman finished two shots clear of Middle Tennessee's Marcus Byrd who made a run with a round of 2-under on Wednesday. Tolver Dozier holed out on the first playoff hole at the New Haven Regional in 2015 to also earn an individual berth into the NCAA Championship.
Troy started the day in sixth place, but couldn't overcome a rough front nine as the Trojans made the turn at a collective 12-over. However, Troy responded on the back nine with a collective 5-over and finished just eight shots behind Lipscomb for fifth place.
Central Florida won the team title at 1-under for the week, while Vanderbilt, Kennesaw State and Clemson all tied for second place at 1-over. Troy clipped a trio of top-25 teams as it picked up victories over No. 25 Missouri, No. 11 Texas Tech and No. 23 Georgia.
Jared Bettcher also made the turn even after birdies on No. 4 and No. 7 and bogeys on No. 2 and No. 5. After pushing his card to 2-over after four holes on the back nine, Bettcher birdied the par-3 No. 15 to close at 5-over for the tournament, 1-over for the day and tied for 24th place overall.
Clayton Vannoy and Calum Masters tied for 39th place at 8-over for the week after firing rounds of 76 and 77, respectively, on Wednesday. Vannoy's card was balanced with a birdie and three bogeys on both sides of course, while Masters also had a birdie on each side.
Luke Moser struggled on the front nine as he made the turn at 7-over, put was the lone Trojan to play the back under par as he dropped birdies on No. 10 and No. 13 around a bogey on No. 18 to shoot 6-over on the day and 10-over for the tournament; he finished tied for 48th place overall.
Quotable – Head Coach Matt Terry
"We didn't get off to a very good start as the first three holes killed us. We had three bogeys on No. 2 and you just can't do that on this golf course when the wind is calm. We made the turn at 5-over total and it looks like you've got no shot; we stayed calm but just couldn't get anything going. The five guys played as hard as they could today, but we just didn't have it. I know the guys are disappointed, I'm disappointed but hopefully over the next few days we can reflect on what these guys have done for this University.
"This is the best we've finished at a Regional in a long time and there are a lot of really good teams that are not getting out of Regionals across the country. We beat three top-25 teams and today we beat probably the No. 1 team in America by two shots (Vanderbilt). That tells me that these guys are awfully good and it's disappointing that the team is not getting through.
"Cam (Norman) played his tail off for three days and I had the good fortune of walking with him and watching it; it was pretty special. He had some timely up-and-downs, a couple of chip-ins and a long eagle putt today. He showed a lot of gut and a lot of moxie out there on the golf course and hopefully he can take that with him to Chicago.
