TROY, Alabama – Troy baseball will hit the road to Starkville to face off with No. 8 Mississippi State in the final mid-week tilt of the 2017 season Tuesday night. The game will be broadcast live on SEC Network+ with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. from Dudy Noble Field.
Â
The Trojans (30-21) have won five games in a row, including a three-game sweep of Sun Belt foe ULM this weekend.
Â
Troy's Andrew Crane extended his scoreless inning streak to 36.2 IP and improved his ERA to 0.98 – 2nd in NCAA – in Friday's series-opening victory over the Warhawks. The scoreless inning streak is the longest in Sun Belt history, shattering the previous record of 27.1 innings set twice in 1990 by John Wylie of Jacksonville and in 1993 by Phil Brassington of Lamar.
Â
Troy catcher Chase Smartt was on fire offensively over the weekend, with three three-hit performances to finish 9-for-14 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Mason Rogers continued his tear at the plate for the Trojans, going 6-for-14 (.429) with a double and five RBIs – he has six multi-hit performances in the last seven games.
Â
Head coach Mark Smartt will send freshman lefty Max Newton (2-0, 4.29) to the mound for the start. Newton earned the win in his start against No. 5 Auburn earlier this season – allowing only two runs on five hits in five innings of work.
Â
Their last time out, the eighth-ranked Bulldogs (33-19) dropped an SEC series at Georgia, 2-1. Mississippi State is led by one of the most potent offensive weapons in the country, Brent Rooker. Rooker leads the country with 25 doubles and a .879 slugging percentage; while ranking third nationally in home runs (20) and RBIs (68).
