TROY, Alabama – Surrounded by a standing room only audience at the Troy Golf Clubhouse, the Sun Belt champion Troy women's golf team learned Thursday they would be heading to Athens, Ga., and the UGA Golf Course on May 8-10 for its third NCAA Regional appearance in the last four seasons.
"I'm super excited and I think that is a good site for us," Troy head coach Bart Barnes said. "Our young ladies have been there and seen the course a few weeks ago and we probably saw the course at the toughest conditions it can possibly play with 30-to-40 mile-per-hour winds."
Troy captured its third Sun Belt title in the last four years with a five-shot victory over Georgia State just over a week ago to earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Regional field.
"We are very excited to find out that we are going to Athens," Troy senior Fátima Fernández Cano said. "It would mean the world for me and the team to be one of those 24 teams that gets to compete at nationals."
There are four NCAA Regional sites with 18 teams and six individuals at each location. The top six teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team at each Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Trojans earned the No. 15 seed in the Athens Regional which features Alabama, Georgia, Northwestern, Arizona and Baylor as the top-five seeds.
"To say that I could see three Regional berths when I took over as a first-year head coach, not in my wildest dreams," Barnes said. "These young ladies have worked really hard and have done so much to make this university proud and to make this athletics department proud. It's been a great experience working with each of them."
The UGA Golf Course is a familiar one for the Trojans as they played in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the facility earlier in the month and came away with a match play victory over No. 59 Old Dominion and two narrow defeats (3-2) to both No. 11 South Carolina and No. 22 Purdue.
Cano and Becca Horner have been part of all three of Troy's Sun Belt championships and NCAA Regional runs, while Gabi Oubre' was on a pair of NCAA Regional teams during her two years at Mississippi State before transferring to Troy.
The rest of the field features Wake Forest, Central Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Clemson, Augusta, Auburn, Kansas State, Michigan State, Princeton, North Florida and Quinnipiac.
