FRANKLIN, Tennessee – Calum Masters fired a 3-under 68 to lead the No. 61 Troy men's golf team on the opening day of the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends North Course. Troy is in ninth place following Friday's opening round, but the Trojans are within striking distance of the pack.
Masters' 68 was his lowest round of the season, while the 3-under on the par-71 course tied a season best for the Trojan sophomore. He made the turn at even par after two birdies and two bogeys, but played the back nine at 3-under to finish the day tied for third overall.
No. 6 Florida holds a one-shot lead over No. 3 Vanderbilt, while Troy is just two shots back of No. 43 Liberty. The Trojans' finished 4-over on the day snapping a streak of eight straight rounds either at or below par. Vanderbilt's Theo Humphrey shot 5-under on the day to grab the individual lead.
Luke Moser had a pair of birdies and a double-bogey to finish the day tied for 23rd place with an even 71, while Clayton Vannoy had a pair birdies as he went on to shoot 3-over and sit in a tie for 47th. Jared Bettcher and Cam Norman combined for six birdies and both shot 75 to end the day tied for 55th, while Jake Tiffin, who is competing as an individual, shot 7-over.
Troy will play Saturday's second round with Missouri and Liberty beginning at 8:30 a.m.
