Troy Scores 16; Clinches Series

TROY, Alabama – All but one Trojan drove in a run and Corey Childress retired 14 batters in a row to lead Troy to a 16-7 victory over Hofstra Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Every starter scored at least once and five different batters contributed with multiple hits as the Trojans (9-6) racked up 14 total hits to take the series 3-1 from Hofstra (4-11).
Chase Smartt led the attack – going 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored three runs. Seniors TJ Binder and Justin Friend drove in a combined seven runs – Binder with four and Friend with three. Drew Frederic, Matt Sanders and Mason Rogers all added two hits a piece to the Trojan total.
Childress (1-2) entered in relief in the fourth inning and delivered 4.2 shut out innings to close out the game on the mound for Troy.
The Pride rallied in the fourth to put six runs up but failed to score the remainder of the game. Matt Riesner led the club by driving in three runs and scoring a run in a 2-for-4 performance. Brad Witkowski (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs – four earned – on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.

The Trojans will begin conference play with a road trip to Little Rock, Arkansas Friday. First pitch for the series opener against Little Rock is set for 6 p.m.
