2/26/2017 8:22:00 PM | Softball
TROY, Alabama- In the closing day of the Troy Classic, the Trojans fell to Lipscomb and Southeastern Louisiana at the Troy Softball Complex on Sunday. Troy now moves to 9-6 on the season.
Troy 2, Lipscomb 4
After an exciting walk-off home run in Saturday's win against No.19 Pittsburgh, the Trojans dropped to Lipscomb 4-2 in the first game of the day. Both teams put runs on the board early as the Bison scored two in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Trojans were able to answer back as a single and a passed ball brought in Becca Hartley from third.
Both teams had defensive rallies in the second and third innings as no runs were scored on either side. Troy was able to tie the game at 2-2 as doubles from Madeline Porter and Brooke Echols scored a run.
Lipscomb regained and held on to the lead after scoring one run in the sixth and another run in the seventh that Troy could not find an answer to. Echols led the team in hits after posting two doubles during the game.
Rachel Rigney Brown earned another start in the circle, and was relieved by sophomore Peyton Glover after 1.1 innings of work. Glover threw 3.2 innings and delivered two strikeouts before handing the ball over to Claire Graves to close out the game.
Troy 1, Southeastern Louisiana 2
The final game of the tournament came down to the last out as Troy had the bases loaded with the winning run on second base, but a deep fly ball to left field with two outs gave the Lions the 2-1 win.
A few pitching and catching miscues from Troy allowed Southeastern to score both of their runs in the third inning to give them a 2-0 advantage.
Troy scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth as Hartley singled to right field and stole second to put her in scoring position. An RBI single from Stephanie Snyder drove Hartley home to cut the Lions' lead to one.
The Lions recorded three hits in the next two innings and the Troy defense made big stops to keep Southeastern from bringing in any more runs. Unfortunately, Troy's loaded bases comeback fell just shy of the win.
Graves returned to the circle for the first 5.1 innings of the game before Glover took over in the top of the fifth.
NOTEWORTHY
• Senior shortstop Becca Hartley leads the team as she has reached base in 15 consecutive at-bats and currently has an eight game hitting streak.
• Left fielder Stephanie Snyder leads the Trojans with a .362 batting average as she has collected 17 hits in 47 at-bats. She also leads the team in doubles with five.
• Hartley made an appearance behind the plate as catcher for the first time this season
QUOTABLE
"This team has done a great job finding ways to win, but we just did not make the adjustments that we needed to this weekend," head coach Beth Mullins said. "We have to mature a little bit and consistently bring pitching, defense and hitting. We are going to take tomorrow off and rest up a little bit, and then we are going to travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on a good Florida A&M team."
UP NEXT
Troy looks to bounce back as it embarks on an eleven game road swing as they face Florida A&M in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 and 5 p.m. CT, before heading to LSU to close out tournament play in Baton Rouge, La. The Trojans will start conference play on March 11, as they travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern.
