Box Score
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – New Orleans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 13th inning to defeat Troy, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field. The three-game series now is tied at one game each with the rubber game set for Sunday at noon.
The first two Privateers (6-1) reached in the bottom of the 13th inning with back-to-back singles and then Troy's third error of the game allowed the winning run to cross the plate. Two of New Orleans' three runs in the game were unearned.
After New Orleans struck first with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, Chase Smartt knotted the game with his second home run of the season in the fourth.
UNO jumped back in front on a Dakota Dean RBI single in the fifth inning and Matt Sanders' sacrifice fly in the seventh tied the game at 2-2, where it stayed until the 13th frame.
Evan Hebert was again strong on the mound for the Trojans and again took a no-decision. Pitching in his home state, Hebert struck out nine and allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits over six innings of work. He has struck out 16 batters and allowed just five hits and two earned runs in 11.2 innings this season over two starts.
Drew Frederic, Steven Whitaker and Brandon Lockridge all had a pair of hits in the game for the Trojans (3-3), while Whitaker stole his sixth base of the season and Lockridge extended his hitting streak to six games. Owen Magee was the lone Privateer with multiple hits in the game.
UNO was led by an outstanding relief appearance from Rafael Martinez. Martinez (2-0) entered in the ninth and threw the rest of the game – striking out four and allowing only two hits – en route to the victory. Marc Skinner (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Trojans after he allowed the unearned run in the 13th.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Defense Stamps Out Ninth-Inning Rally: After a stout defensive battle the entire game, the Privateers' Owen Magee reached second on an error to lead off the bottom of the ninth. The Trojan defense tightened up, however, and denied a sacrifice bunt attempt on the next at-bat – catching the Magee advancing to third. Aaron Palmer hit a solid grounder up the middle, but Matt Sanders snagged it and turned an inning-ending double play to send the game to extras.
13th Inning: The Trojans fell behind quickly, as UNO started off the frame with back-to-back singles. Marc Skinner got the next batter, Veillon, to fly out to center. However, with one out, a Troy error allowed the winning run to cross the plate.
NOTEWORTHY
• Brandon Lockridge has now had a hit in every game to start his sophomore season.
• The Trojans fell to 4-4 in extra-inning games under head coach Mark Smartt.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Trojans will call on Houston Mabray (1-0, 0.00) for the series win Sunday. First pitch on "Championship Sunday" at Maestri Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
