TROY, Alabama – Troy head coach Ged O'Connor announced Tuesday the addition of Joe Connon as the associate head coach of the Trojan soccer program.
Â
"I am extremely grateful and excited to be at Troy University," Connon said. "I would like to thank Chancellor Jack Hawkins, Jr. and Athletics Director Jeremy McClain for this amazing opportunity. I would also like to thank Ged O'Connor for placing his trust in me moving forward. I have been to Troy a few times in the past for different events and really enjoyed the time I spent here; the people are fantastic. I'm ready to get started."
Â
Connon (ko-non) comes to Troy from Saint Leo University where he worked with O'Connor for the last three seasons.
Â
"I am excited to have Joe on the Troy staff," O'Connor said. "He is motivated to win on the soccer field and in the classroom. He has a great coaching and playing background that will serve him well at Troy."
Â
With the Lions, Connon helped mold teams that advanced to two NCAA Division II Tournaments (2014, 2016), while his 2016 squad won the Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament championship. The Lions finished that year ranked No. 17 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll. Two players earned NSCAA All-America honors and three were named NSCAA All-South Region first team.
Â
As a member of the Saint Leo staff in 2014, Connon and the Lions advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the year 14-6 and ranked No. 15 in the nation.
Â
Connon began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Lynn University prior to the 2010 season and moved into a full-time role in 2012.Â
The Dublin, Ireland native was a four-year letterwinner at Missouri Baptist where he earned NAIA?All-America honorable mention honors as a freshman. He played for his country's U15 national team as a youth before moving on to play for Crystal Palace and Sunderland.
