TROY, Alabama – Troy women's indoor track and field team will compete in the Sun Belt Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Monday and Tuesday. Five of their six meets have been hosted at the CrossPlex this season.
For the Trojans, the championships will start Monday morning with the women's weight throw event and will wrap up Tuesday afternoon with the 4x400-meter relay.
The title was taken home by Appalachian State last season with a score of 101.50. Troy improved on their previous season's performance but finished in seventh place. However, after a season full of personal bests, the Trojans are in a favorable position to finish even higher this year.
QUOTABLE
"We are looking forward to competing at Sun Belt," Troy head coach Marc Davis said. "With this being a young team, it will be a great competitive experience for them. This league is a very good league, so we have to bring our best to get the results we are looking for. The veteran group that we are bringing has scored in the league in the past. They know what to expect and are taking it upon themselves to mentor and guide the group. We need this group to come out and give their best. If they do that, great results will be achieved."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
• Niata Alexander, who finished second in the 200-meter dash at the Samford Open, currently holds the fourth fastest time in the 200-meter and the sixth fastest time in the 400-meter in the Sun Belt.
• Riley Schwietz, who placed fourth in the long jump last weekend, also has the fifth best pentathlon score in the Sun Belt this season.
• Troy's 4x400-meter relay team is coming off of a third place finish at the Samford Open and is sitting at fifth in the conference headed into this weekend.
