TROY, Alabama – The Fighting Gierkes utilized timely hitting to defeat the Phillips Heads, 5-1, in the first game of the Fall World Series Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
The Fighting Gierkes struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Sadler Goodwin drove in Brandon Lockridge on an RBI double following a two-out walk.
Â
The 1-0 score stood until Mackenzie Hicks and Lockridge teamed up for two solo homers in the fifth inning. Lockridge finished the game 1-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.
Â
In the top of the sixth, the Phillips Heads cut into the lead when freshman Bobby Spitulski ripped one off the target in right to score Jackson Cofer – Spitulski went 2-for-2 with the RBI to lead all hitters in the game.
Â
Max Newton earned the start and the victory for the Gierkes with 3.1 innings of shutout work on the mound. Lance Johnson, Ryan Fultz and Goodwin combined to throw the final 3.2 innings of the seven-inning game and allowed only one run on one hit around five strikeouts.
Â
The Gierkes iced the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two unearned runs and extending the lead to 5-1.
Â
Jimmy Robbins suffered the loss for the Phillips Heads after allowing three runs on four hits in five innings on the mound – Robbins struck out four and walked only one batter.
Â
Quotable – Fighting Gierkes Head Coach Shane Gierke
"Max went out and gave us the start we needed with four scoreless innings. Lance came in and did what Lance does: competes and gets us back in the dugout. Hicks and Lockridge gave us some timely hits with home runs there in the fifth. Then we extended the lead there in the bottom of the sixth, which was big."
Â
Game two of the series is set for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Riddle-Pace – all games are open to the public. The Gierkes will look to clinch the series behind RHP CJ Carter, while the Phillips try to even the set on the arm of RHP Corey Childress.
