TROY, Alabama – The exhibition opener for Troy men's basketball didn't go as hoped as Georgia Southwestern State came away with an 88-87 win in overtime on Wednesday night in Trojan Arena.
Â
"We didn't sense that we needed to be humbled, but whether we did or not, it's a humbling experience," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "They were the better team tonight. They spread us out and beat us off the dribble. We've got to get Jordon Varnado back healthy. We'll be fine. If we needed a wake-up call, this is certainly one."
Â
It was the Wesley Person show from the beginning as the senior picked up right where he left off from Troy's championship run last season. Person had 30 points aided by six 3-pointers and hit the tying three with just four seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
Overtime started the same way as the Brantley, Ala. native immediately drained another three on Troy's first possession of overtime. A free-throw by Person with 10 seconds left in overtime looked like it may seal it, but the Hurricanes got a shot off the glass by Devin Watson with two seconds left.
Â
Troy unveiled three freshmen for the first time as well as redshirt-freshmen Darian Adams in a game that saw the Trojans use multiple new lineups. Varnado, who missed the last week of practice with a foot injury, was limited while Jaro Moravek also sat with a lower-body injury. Â
Â
NOTEWORTHY
• It was a solid outing for B.J. Miller as the guard had 11 points on the night. Miller is expected to replace some of the scoring left in the void of Jeremy Hollimon.
Â
• The deep ball proved to be the difference on the night as Georgia Southwestern State hit 16 3-pointers
Â
• Alex Hicks was up-against his brother Ben, who is the Hurricanes coach.
UP NEXT
The regular season is next as Troy travels to Honolulu, Hawai'I to participate in the Rainbow Classic beginning with North Dakota on Nov. 10. For more information on Troy men's basketball, follow the team on social media at @TroyMensHoops or by visiting TroyTrojans.com.
