Box Score
MACON, Ga. – Troy was unable to overcome Mercer in a 77-73 defeat on Sunday afternoon as the two teams met in an exhibition to help raise money for those affected by the recent hurricanes across the nation.
It was an explosive afternoon for the Trojans' trio of Wesley Person, Kevin Baker and Jordon Varnado as the three combined for 52 points. Person, who had 30 points in the preseason opener on Wednesday, added a team-high 24 points on seven field goals and 7-8 free throw shooting.
Plenty of optimism was abound for Varnado after the forward missed parts of the preseason with a foot injury. He was a solid 9-13 shooting for 18 points after being limited against Georgia Southwestern State.
Troy had the opportunity to potentially tie the game after trailing by just two with 49 seconds play, but Mercer was able to grab an offensive rebound on the ensuing possession.
The Trojans were forced to foul with 17 seconds left, which put the Bears back up by four. Juan Davis, Jr. was unable to hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to seal Troy's fate.
NOTEWORTHY
• Turnover margin was a bright spot as Troy had 11 in the game compared to Mercer's 20.
• B.J. Miller, who had 11 points on Wednesday, added another nine. He is projected to be one of Troy's top reserves after the departure of Jeremy Hollimon.
• Troy shot an effective 51.7 percent from the field in the second half but just 23.1 percent from three in that same span.
