Women’s Tennis Dominates on Day One of Gridiron Classic

FULL RESULTS
MACON, Georgia – Troy women's tennis traveled to Macon, Ga., for the Gridiron Classic hosted by Mercer where the Trojans won a dominating 12 of 13 matches on the day, in both singles and doubles.
On the doubles courts, each Troy duo earned a first round bye to get an automatic bid in the Round of 16. Seniors Jiayuan Xue and Efriliya Herlina continued to look strong as the pair powered past a duo from Florida A&M 6-0 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
All-Sun Belt Doubles First Team partners Nancy Kaarky and Sanae Ohta started their senior campaigns strong winning their first doubles match of the year 6-3 over a pair from Georgia State College. An injury on the other side of the court retired their second match of the day, giving them an automatic spot on the semifinals.
Freshmen Maria Casas Blas and Matea Mihaljevic also picked up an impressive 6-0 win in doubles and will face a combined duo from Alabama State and Florida A&M on Saturday.
In singles play, Ohta picked up a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win after a first round bye. She will face Katie Sidor of Mercer tomorrow. Herlina continued to show out with two big singles wins. She won her Round of 32 match 6-2, 6-3 and her Round of 16 match 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Karaky took a first round bye and won convincingly 6-0, 6-0 against an opponent from Florida Southern. Xue defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0 to earn a position in the quarterfinals.
Lastly, Mihaljevic picked up two wins on the day with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision in her first round and a 6-2, 6-2 win to advance to the quarterfinals. After a first round bye, Casas Blas defeated an opponent from Middle Georgia to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
Matches will continue on Saturday, weather permitting.
