South Alabama Tops Troy Volleyball

MOBILE, Alabama – The South Alabama Jaguars (10-5, 5-0 SBC) remain perfect in the Sun Belt as they defeated the Trojans (6-13,1-5 SBC) 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-21) Wednesday night at the Jag Gym.

Savannah Moore and Belle Waldrop led the Trojan attack each posting eight kills. Moore recorded a career-high .636 attack percentage as she only committed one error in her 11 total attempts.

Troy struggled at the net defensively as the Trojans only recorded one block, also from Waldrop and Moore, as the Jaguars posted 10 stops.

South Alabama remained in control for the entire first set, but the Trojans stayed on its heels and put the score within one at 13-14, until the Jaguars went on a five-point run to take a 19-13 lead to force the Trojans to call a timeout. Troy bounced back taking the next two points, but the Jags were able to close out the set 25-17, taking a 1-0 match lead.

The Jaguars jumped out early in the second set taking a 4-0 lead as the momentum remained on the home side of the net. South Alabama posted a .296 attack percentage in set two, while holding the Trojans to a .032 attack percentage. Troy seven errors compared to South Alabama's two made the difference in the set.

Troy bounced back in the third set answering with a .242 attack percentage, but the Jag offense stayed hot as South Alabama posted a .303 percentage. Both teams went on early four-point runs and the Trojans took their first big lead of the night at 13-8 forcing the Jags to call a timeout. South Alabama took nine of the next 11 points to regain the lead. The Trojans fought back late, but their rally fell short as a three-point run for the Jaguars capped the match.

• The Trojans led the Jaguars in assists and digs as Kiara Barrett posted a career-high 19 digs and Cheyenne Hayes recorded nine digs.
• Belle Waldrop remains the team's kill leader with 168 on the season (2.42 kills/set).
• Logan Page, Cheyenne Hayes and Savannah Moore are the only players to start every match for the Trojans this year.
• Troy continues to lead its opponents in kills (856-755), assists (797-676), Aces (103-84) and digs (807-799).

Troy will bring the rivalry home as the Trojans host South Alabama at the Trojan Arena on Saturday, October 7 at 4 p.m., in the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match. The volleyball players will also host a youth clinic following the match for ages four to eighth grade. Admission to all Troy volleyball games is free.
