Troy Volleyball Suffers a Heartbreaker Against Appalachian State

BOONE, North Carolina – Troy volleyball (9-18, 3-9 SBC) fell just short in a thrilling five-setter against Appalachian State (9-17, 4-8 SBC) on the road on Sunday in Boone, N.C.
The Trojans and Mountaineers opened the match going point-for-point in set one, but Appalachian State was able to break away with a narrow, extra-point 27-25 win in set one. The first set featured 14 ties and five lead changes.
The Trojans bounced back in the second set to take down the Mountaineers 25-20 to even the match at 1-1. It was a set of runs for Troy as it had four runs of three or more straight points to seal the set two win.
The Trojans used their momentum in the third set to take a 2-1 match lead with a 25-18 decision. The Troy offense hit a match-high .484 hitting percentage in set three.
The Mountaineers rallied back on their home court to take the next two sets to win the match. Troy only managed to hit a .108 in the fourth set as the Mountaineers' offense took advantage.
Appalachian State rounded out the fifth set with a .318 hitting percentage. The Trojans hit a .242 and stayed neck-and-neck with the Mountaineers until the home team managed two-straight points to take the 17-15 extra-point win.
Four Trojans had double-digit kills in the match, led by freshman Cheyenne Hayes with 14. Defensive specialist Bethany Cullity continued to prove she could play at the net with a team-high .389 hitting percentage, while libero SaraGrace Wilson paced the defense with 17 digs.

NOTEWORTHY
- Kiara Barrett now has 549 assists on the season for the Trojans. She also leads Troy in service aces with 29.
- Cullity plastered the score sheet with eight kills, a .389 hitting percentage, three assists, one ace, 15 digs and one block for the Trojans.
- Troy now moves to 3-2 in five-set matches and 1-10 on the road.
- Appalachian State now takes possession of the third place ranking in the sun Belt East division with this win over Troy.
- Troy played in its 100th set of the season against the Mountaineers. Savannah Moore, Belle Waldrop, Hayes, Logan Page and Barrett have played in all 100 sets.
UP NEXT
The Trojans will wrap-up the season with two weekends of Sun Belt Conference play in the Trojan Arena. Troy will take on ULM and UL Lafayette on November 3-4 and then close out the season looking for redemption against Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. for all matches.
