TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA – Troy cross country's regular season came to a close on Friday afternoon at the Alabama Crimson Classic Cross Country Invitational with the men's team finishing in 12th and the women coming in 30th.
Both teams struggled to gain momentum heading into the Sun Belt Championships as the highest finisher for either team was Brackin Stewart on the men's side with a 60th place finish and time of 25:47.1 in the 8,000 meter event.
"As sloppy as the execution was on the men's side, we were still fairly competitive," head coach Elliott Blount said. "I was concerned going in about the confidence level getting in the way of a solid effort, but they showed up. In two weeks, however, we must be sharp or we'll find ourselves in vulnerable position against the majority of the conference."
Behind him was Sawyer Sprung with a time of 25:56.0 for 69th place. That time was narrowly behind his season-best time of 25:43.2 set two weeks ago at the JSU Foothills Invitational.
Bradley Dixon, Brennan Garriques and Daniel Glick rounded out the top-100 finishers by placing 70th, 88th and 94th, respectively. Troy's average time was 26:02.30 while top-finisher Middle Tennessee State had an average time of 24:41.48.
On the women's side, just five runners competed on the day for the Trojans. Erika Kulp took the top spot with a time of 24:35.0 in the 6,000 meter event.
"My preparation wasn't adequate enough for them," Blount said. "I didn't get them to the line ready to run and perform the way they are capable of running. We'll figure out a way to get this team going for the Sun Belt Championships even if it means shaking up the conference lineup from what we originally planned."
It was the first time this season the women have raced in the 6,000 meter. Troy had an average time of 25:28.10 on the day.
