Women’s Tennis Comes Out on Top at Georgia Southern Invite

STATESBORO, Georgia- Women's tennis started the season off strong as seniors Jiayuan Xue and Efriliya Herlina won the doubles championship and Herlina won the White singles flight at the Georgia Southern Fall Invite that concluded on Sunday afternoon.

After a dominating first day, the Trojans continued to look strong on the courts. Xue fell in three sets her round of eight match, but picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win in her consolation match on Saturday.

Freshman Maria Casas Blas earned her first win as a Trojan as she defeated Ilona Golynker 6-1, 6-3, but ultimately fell to an opponent from UTC on Sunday, in a tough 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 decision.

In the White Flight, freshman Matea Mihaljevic also recorded her first collegiate win after earning a bye on Friday. She defeated Bogdana Zaprozhets from UTC in a quick 6-0, 6-0 match, but dropped her semifinal match to a Georgia Southern opponent.

Herlina shined throughout the tournament as her three straight wins carried her to a spot in the championship. The senior defeated Emilia Bujan from Georgia Southern in a hard-fought three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Xue and Herlina also came out on top on the doubles court as the duo defeated another pair from UTC, 6-4. While Casas Blas and Mihaljevic fell in their first doubles match, they bounced back to take a 6-3 win over a pair from host team Georgia Southern.

UP NEXT
Troy will continue tournament play as the team travels to Macon, Ga., to compete in the Mercer Gridiron Classic, Oct.6-8. Draws and times for all matches are TBA.
