Troy Baseball Begins Spring Practice for 2017 Season

TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team held its first spring practice in preparation for the 2017 season on Friday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.

Troy, who finished fourth in the Sun Belt Conference regular season in 2016, returns a couple of key elements returning for the 2017 season.

Offensively, Joey Denison returns for the Trojans. He led the team with a .322 batting average, which was good for 10th best in the Sun Belt. The Troy, Ala., native finished the season with 14 home runs, seven doubles and 37 RBIs, all team highs.

On the mound, Corey Childress and Marc Skinner will be returning as key contributors. Childress, who will move to the starting rotation this season, recorded 10 saves in 2016. His 10 saves tied him for the second-most in Troy's single-season history. Childress posted a 3.12 ERA and struck out 46 batters, the most of any relief pitcher.

Skinner made 27 relief appearances and pitched 36 innings last season. The Phenix City, Ala., native struck out 30 and only allowed 13 walks.

The Trojans feature 12 newcomers, including five junior college transfers and seven true freshen. Troy will get a big boost, as eight redshirt players will look to see action in 2017.

Troy opens up its season with a four game series against Xavier, who made it to an NCAA Regional final in Nashville, on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m., at Riddle-Pace Field.
