Troy Softball Drops Doubleheader to Rival South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy softball team fell to the South Alabama Jaguars in a doubleheader with scores of 6-2 in the first game and 4-3 in the nightcap.
TROY 2, USA 6
Troy (30-22, 11-12 Sun Belt) had five hits in the first game but could only push two runs across the plate in the sixth inning.
Erica Davis got things started in the top of the sixth inning when she drew a leadoff walk and Kate Benton came up behind her with a single to the pitcher to place runners on first and second for the Trojans.
Amanda Winters stepped into the box two batters later and blistered a ball to right center for a stand-up double that brought Davis and Benton around for the score.
South Alabama (31-16, 16-6 Sun Belt) jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dayla Gulledge doubled to center field and brough Emily Messer around for the first run of the game.
The Jaguars plated two more runs in the third inning after Haleigh Lane doubled down the left field line and brought Gulledge and Stephanie Pilkington around to extend their lead 3-0.
The final three Jaguar runs came in the fifth inning off a Gulledge solo-shot to left field, a wild pitch and a Messer infield single.
Devin Brown (19-10) got the win in the circle for the Jaguars. She pitched a complete game, gave up only two runs and recorded 17 strikeouts. Claire Graves (7-5) suffered the loss for the Trojans and gave up six runs on seven hits.
TROY 3, USA 4
Troy came into the second game with hot bats and racked up 10 hits. Benton went 3-for-4 while Meg Willis and Khadija Neely both went 2-for-4.
Willis came to the plate with two outs in the top of the first and hammered a two-run home run ball over the left field wall to make the score 2-0.
The Trojans final run came in the second inning when Hannah Day doubled to right center and brought Benton around for the score.
South Alabama wasn't able to score until the fifth inning when Messer scored on a wild pitch and Pilkington hit into a groundout that scored Kaleigh Todd to make the score 3-2 in Troy's favor.
Pilkington came back to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and sent a walk-off double off the right field wall and brought Messer around for the tie and Megan Harris for the go-ahead run.
Destin Vicknair (12-5) captured the win for the Jaguars. She gave up 10 hits, three runs and recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Rachel Rigney (1-1) shouldered the loss for the Trojans. She gave up one run and one hit.
The final game of the series is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Jaguar Field.
