TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team recently wrapped up its 2016 campaign at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Mobile, Ala., and the season was another record breaking one on many fronts.
For the second straight season, the Trojans broke a school record for home runs in a season as Troy belted 62 long balls. The previous record was set in 2015 with 51 home runs hit. Hannah Day led the team with 16, Becca Hartley hit 11, Amanda Winters hit 10 and Carli Kayler finished the season with seven.
Day and Benton led the Trojans offensively and made a name for themselves in the Troy record books, despite only playing two years a piece with the Trojans.
Benton set the Troy single-season and career records for batting average. Her .411 single-season batting average propelled her to the top of the record book and she bypassed Mitzi McLendon's .408 batting average that was set in 1997. She batted .364 during her two years at Troy and that was enough to push her past recent Troy Hall of Fame inductee Sandy Atkins who set the career batting average record in 1995 with a .359 mark.
Benton also set the single-season stolen bases record with 41 and her 67 career stolen bases is good enough to put her in the fifth spot. She also led the team with 76 hits and 52 runs scored which put her in second in the record book for runs in a single season.
Day brought the power at the plate this season for the Trojans. She blasted 16 home runs and pushed her way to third in the record books for home runs in a single-season. Her 64 RBIs were a team-high and enough to clinch the second place spot in the record books for RBIs in a single season.
She also led the team with a .691 slugging percentage, 123 total bases and 12 doubles. She was second on the team with 61 hits, 44 runs and 20 walks.
Winters finished the season with a .279 batting average, 38 hits and 35 runs. She was second on the team with 47 RBIs and was third on the team with a .581 slugging percentage. She led the team with 38 walks and with 304 putouts defensively.
Ashley Rainey led the way for the Trojans in the circle as she finished with a 3.87 ERA and a 16-14 record. She pitched 146.2 innings and only walked 39 batters. Her 52 career wins puts her third in the Troy record book and her 551.1 innings pitched is the third most in Troy history.
Troy shortstop Becca Hartley was stellar on defense. She had 120 assists, which was the most in a single-season since 2009 and had 80 putouts. She started all 56 games and only committed seven errors and recorded a .966 fielding percentage.
The Trojans finished the season with a 31-25 record and won 20 home games, which was the most wins at home since 2005 where the Trojans won 21 games.
