TROY, Alabama – Troy men's basketball products Wesley Person and John Walton III were selected as two of 11 players to embark on a cultural exchange trip to the Far East in conjunction with Reach USA, the team announced on Tuesday.
Â
The pair will be traveling from May 16-29 to learn more about the culture of the region while competing with athletes from other American universities and colleges over a span of eight games.
Â
"The good thing about this tour is they play really high-quality competition," head coach Phil Cunningham said. "It's a terrific cultural experience and from a basketball experience it's a really worthwhile trip as well."
Â
This will be the second trip for Walton III, who played with Reach USA last year along with senior guard Jeremy Hollimon. The schedule will be highlighted by games against top teams from China and Lithuania while time off the court will be spent embracing foreign culture.
Â
Person is coming off a stellar sophomore season that saw him earn his second All-Sun Belt selection after leading the Trojans in scoring at 16.8 points per game. The 2015 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year has scored 933 career points in just two seasons while connecting on 170 career 3-pointers. The native of Brantley, Ala., has hit a 3-pointer in all 60 of his career games, which is the longest active streak in the country.
Â
"Each season Wesley has progressed as a player," Cunningham added. "He's broadened his skillset and continues to do that right now. I think any time you can play against high level competition, it will test him some more. He's such a thinker of the game and he's going to analyze everything going on over there."
Â
Upon learning of the trip, Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins suggested Person meet with the Confucius Institute at Troy. There, Person learned fellow Troy students will be in the area at the same time as Reach USA.Â
