Troy Falls to UT Arlington in Series Finale Slug Fest

ARLINGTON, Texas – In a back-and-forth game, the Troy softball team fell to the UT Arlington Mavericks, 13-12, in nine innings at Allan Saxe Field. Troy had already won the series with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Troy (30-20, 11-10 Sun Belt) jumped to an early 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning on multiple errors by the Mavericks. Khadija Neely was the first Trojan to cross the plate on a throwing error by the UT Arlington short stop. Kate Benton then hit into an RBI groundout to score Leah Brundidge, and another Maverick fielding error pushed Stephanie Snyder across the plate.
UT Arlington (29-16, 8-13 Sun Belt) came back in the bottom of the second to tie the game when Sandra Mendoza doubled to right field and scored Mallory Foster and Britnea Barilli. Not to be outdone, the Trojans plate three more runs in the top of the third when Erica Davis sent a three-run shot out of the park to make the score 6-3.
The Mavericks added five runs in the third, one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to regain and extend its lead to 12-6.
Hannah Day notched her 16th home run of the season in the top of the sixth when she lifted a two-run bomb deep over the right center wall to shrink the Mavericks lead to 12-8.
The Trojans weren't finished yet and scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 12-12. Hartley doubled Benton around for the first run of the inning before Amada Winters stepped to the plate with two outs and sent a three-run shot to dead center to send the game into extra innings.
The final run of the game came in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Trojan error to give the Mavericks the 13-12 win.
Meg Willis (1-1) pitched well but shouldered the loss for the Trojans in the circle as she gave up the game-winning unearned run while pitching 2.1 innings and giving up just one hit.
Samantha Clakley (18-11) picked up the win for UT Arlington. She tossed her second complete game of the series and threw 157 pitches in her nine innings of work while allowing nine earned runs.
Troy's final regular season series will be next weekend as Troy squares off with South Alabama in Mobile. The doubleheader on Saturday is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
