Troy Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Troy softball team hit five home runs and had 22 hits on the day to help in the doubleheader sweep of UT Arlington. Troy won the first game 5-4 in nine innings and the second game 12-2 in five innings.
TROY 5, UTA 4
Amanda Winters hammered a ball into right field with an RBI single to tie the game at three and to send the game into extra innings.
Khadija Neely had herself a day as she went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a single and three RBIs. Kate Benton and Amanda Winters both had two hits in the first game.
UT Arlington (28-16, 7-13 Sun Belt) jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the third inning when Sandra Mendoza singled through the left side and scored Cy'Andria Newton. Brianna Burchianti came to the plate two batters later and singled to right field and scored Laura Curry and Mendoza to make the score 3-0.
Troy (30-19, 11-9 Sun Belt) didn't get on the board until the fifth inning when Neely sent her first homer of the game over the left field wall and made the score 3-1.
Two more Trojan runs were plated in the sixth inning when Hannah Day sent a sacrifice fly out to center field and scored Erica Davis. Winters stepped into the box next and sent the game-tying single to right field.
The score remained tied 3-3 as Troy headed into the top of the ninth inning and Khadija Neely hammered a two-run shot over the left field wall for her second home run of the game.
The Mavericks threatened in the bottom of the ninth when Curry singled to center field and scored Britnea Barilli to make the score 5-4 with two outs but the Trojans got the final out on the same play when Amanda Winters threw out the runner going to third from center field.
Rachel Rigney (1-0) picked up her first win of the season in the circle for the Trojans. She tossed 5.2 innings and gave up only one run and two hits. Samantha Clakley (17-11) suffered the loss for the Mavericks. She gave up five runs and seven hits in nine innings of work.
TROY 12, UTA 2
Home runs off the bats of Neely, Winters and Becca Hartley helped Troy get the 12-2 win over UT Arlington in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Mavericks jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the second and couldn't push any more runs across the plate for the rest of the game.
Troy took the 3-2 lead in the third when Winters hit a two-run shot over the left center wall and Stephanie Snyder sent a sacrifice fly to right field to score the third run of the inning.
A nine-run fourth inning clinched the win for the Trojans. Day got things started when she singled to left field and scored Benton. Meg Willis came to the plate two batters later and doubled to left center and brought Day and Becca Hartley around for the score.
Neely was the next batter to step to the plate and sent her third home run of the day over the left field wall and brought Willis and Winters around with her. The last three runs came off the bat of Hartley when she sent a three-run bomb over the left field wall.
Claire Graves (6-4) picked up the win for the Trojans. She tossed a complete game and only gave up two runs.
The series finale against UT Arlington is Sunday and scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
