MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida – No. 2 seed Troy defeated No. 3 seed Arkansas State 4-1 Wednesday morning in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship Match Play; the Trojans will play top-seeded Georgia State this afternoon for the Sun Belt title.
Clayton Vannoy and Luke Moser both won their matches 3&1, while Jared Bettcher won 2-up and Calum Masters won 1-up. Cam Norman dropped a back-and-forth battle 2-up.
Vannoy jumped out to a two-hole lead after five holes, but saw his lead shrink to just 1-up with three holes to play. Vannoy won the last two holes and clinched the match with a birdie on No. 8.
Moser fell behind by one after the first hole on the back nine and then rebounded with a par on No. 2 while Arkansas State picked up a bogey. The Troy junior drained back-to-back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 to move to 2-up and all but clinch his match.
Bettcher moved to 2-up after two holes and led by as many as three on the back nine before settling with a two-hole victory. Masters battled Andrew Huseman back-and-forth all morning with both holding leads of no larger than one hole. Masters grabbed the lead for good on No. 5 after he stroked a par and Huseman bogeyed.
The winner of this afternoon's match play championship will earn the Sun Belt's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. Troy earned an at large bid into last year's NCAA postseason and the Trojans are searching for their first conference title since winning back-to-back Mid-Continent Conference titles in 1996 and 1997.
