Troy Second After Day One of Sun Belt Championship; Masters Third Individually

MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida – Freshman Calum Masters fired a 4-under 67 to lead the Troy men's golf team in Sunday's opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship at the Raven Golf Course. Master is in third place individually, while the Trojans are tied for second as a team.
Masters tied individual leader J.J. Grey from Georgia State with seven birdies in the round. He made the turn at 1-under and played the back nine at 3-under. Over his last 10 rounds, Masters is averaging 70.7 strokes per round with five rounds in the 60s. His nemesis in Sunday's round proved to be a pair of par-3 holes as he double-bogeyed the fourth and bogeyed No. 16.
Masters is just two shots back of Grey and one shot back of Little Rock's Noah Tullos. Clayton Vannoy also turned in a red scorecard for the Trojans thanks to a strong back nine. Vannoy made the turn at 1-over, but stepped it up on the back of the course with three birdies around a bogey to finish the day tied for seventh with a 1-under 70.
Troy shot 4-over as a team and is tied with Texas State for second place, while Georgia State is in first place as a team at 2-under par.
The Trojans were the best in the field on the par-4 holes as they played them to a total of 1-under as a team, but the par-3 holes were a different story as Troy was a tournament worst 13-over par as a team.
Luke Moser rebounded from a rocky start that saw him 4-over after just four holes to play even golf the rest of the way. Troy's stroke leader entering the weekend, Moser finished with three birdies en route to a 4-over 75 and a tie for 32nd place.
Cam Norman opened with a birdie on No. 3 to quickly move to 1-under, however he made the turn at 5-over. Norman rebounded to play the back nine at even par to finish the day tied for 42nd place at 76. Rounding out the field for the Trojans was Jared Bettcher who shot a 6-over 77 and is tied for 46th.
Troy will be in the lead pairing for Monday's second round along with Georgia State and Texas State beginning at 8:15 a.m. The top four teams following three rounds of stroke play will advance to match play on Wednesday.
