Troy Soccer Takes Two at Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky - The women's soccer team traveled to Bowling Green, Ky., to play two matches verses familiar programs in Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. The Trojans won the first against Western Kentucky 1-0 and the second against Middle Tennessee 3-1.
"This was a really good trip for us, getting to face two very tough teams is what will help us to grow," Jason Hamilton said. "You couldn't ask for much more out of our group. With 15 of our 20 players being freshman, there is no better tool to learn and develop than the game itself."

In the first match the Trojans took on host Western Kentucky. In the first half the Lady Toppers controlled much of the play, but Troy was able to go in to the half 0-0.
"Western is a very good team, they were more technical and athletic than our group was," Hamilton said. "They took the game to us in the first half and our group lacked confidence to execute our game plan."
The Trojans came out much stronger in the second half, and took the lead in the 51st minute on a goal from junior Annabell Simpson as she headed in a corner kick. The goal went on to be the game-winning goal.
"We did what we do well, we were stingy defensively and waited for an opportunity. The way we came out in the second half was much better, and hopefully the team saw that doing the things we are asking of them will create success."
Junior Abby Reynolds forced WKU in to a few good saves as Troy continued to press. Freshman Sydney Tucker made a very good save late in the game to preserve the victory. Tucker came in at half time for sophomore Mikki Lewis to combine for the shutout.
Troy 3, Middle Tennessee 1
In the second game of the day, Troy jumped out to an early lead when junior Annabell Simpson volleyed in a ball that Alison Watkins flicked on in the fourth minute. Simpson added her second of the game and third of the day in the seventh minute when she volleyed in a cross from sophomore Haley Roberson.
The Trojans continued to control the game and in the 14th minute freshman Allie Dingle found herself wide open at the back post and calmly volleyed in a cross from Samantha Jacobs. The Trojans took the 3-0 lead in to the half, which was all they needed.
"I was extremely happy with the start to the game," Hamilton said. "The goals we scored were class, and none of them were easy finishes. We looked really good in the first half and knocked the ball around very well."
The second half was a much more even game as the Blue Raiders were able to shut down the Troy attack and got themselves on the board with just under 10 minutes remaining in the match. The Trojans held on to win the match with a 3-1 final score.
