TROY, Alabama – The Troy baseball team has a couple of mid-week games slated for Tuesday and Wednesday night. The Trojans will travel to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a 6 p.m. start with Samford on Tuesday, before heading to Jacksonville State on Wednesday for another 6 p.m. game at Rudy Abbott Field.
Â
Free audio broadcasts will be available for both games on TroyTrojans.com and can be heard at 94.7 WTBF.
Â
Troy (8-5) looks to bounce back after finishing the week 1-4, with its only win coming over SEC opponent Auburn in an 11 inning walk-off win. The Trojans win over Auburn was the first since 2013, when Troy defeated the Tigers 11-2 at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
Matt Sanders leads the team offensively with a .367 batting average, two doubles and five RBIs. Reid Long has nine RBIs and three doubles this season; both are a team-best. Sanders went 6-for-16 (.375 batting average) with a double and a clutch extra-inning RBI in last week's games.
Â
Freshman Cory Gill (1-0) will get the start on the mound against Samford. Gill pitched 4.1 innings, only allowed three hits, two walks and struck out six in his last start against No. 22 Alabama. The Cottonwood, Ala., native also made a relief appearance against Michigan State. He pitched a clean inning and picked up a strikeout.
Â
Samford (7-5) is lead by Heath Quinn and Austin Edens offensively. Both players have a combined 10 doubles, 13 home runs and 38 RBIs on the young season. Quinn has eight home runs, one triple and has driven in 24 runs. Edens has five home runs, five doubles and 14 RBIs.
Â
Stephen Jones (1-0) will face off against Gill on the mound on Tuesday night. Jones has started three games, but has only thrown 9.2 innings. He brings in a 4.66 ERA with four strikeouts.
Â
Jacksonville State (6-4) is fresh off a weekend sweep over Western Kentucky. The Gamecocks won each game by a combined four runs. Paschal Petrongolo, who leads Jacksonville State, is batting a team-high .417 with three doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs.
Â
Troy leads the all-time series with both teams. The Trojans lead the series with Samford 39-20 but split the season series in 2015. Troy has defeated Jacksonville State 81 times and has only lost 56 times. However, the Gamecocks swept the Trojans in two games last year.
