OPELIKA, Alabama – The stage is set for a classic finish at the Tiger Invitational as No. 67 Troy moved to within two shots of No. 5 Auburn in Monday's second round of the Tiger Invitational at the Grand National Lake Course.
Troy junior Luke Moser jumped five spots up the individual leaderboard into first place after firing a round of 3-under, his eighth round under par this season and fourth in the 60s. Moser, who is currently leading individuals ranked fifth and eighth in the country, opened with back-to-back birdies to quickly move to 2-under par.
The Waterloo, Ontario native slipped back to 1-under after a bogey on No. 3, but rebounded with a birdie on No. 4 to move back to 2-under. Following 10 straight pars, Moser sank a huge putt on the par-3 No. 15 to move to 3-under on the day and 4-under for the tournament.
The Trojans shot 1-over as a team, while the host Tigers finished the day 4-over which allowed Troy to move within two strokes of the nation's fifth-ranked team heading into Tuesday's final round. No. 60 Kennesaw State will be the third team in the final pairing as they are six back of Auburn and four back of Troy.
Troy was once again strong on the front nine as they were 4-under as a team after shooting 6-under in Sunday's opening round. Moser made the turn at 2-under, while Jared Bettcher and Clayton Vannoy were 1-under and Cam Norman was even.
Vannoy rebounded from a shaky opening round to card an important round of 72 on Monday for the Trojans. He finished with four birdies on the day to climb 30 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 27th place.
Bettcher has his sights set on his fourth top-10 finish of the season (seven events) as he is currently tied for eighth place. After bogeys on two of his first five holes put Bettcher in an early hole, he responded with three consecutive birdies right before making the turn. An up-and-down back nine followed with three birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey and when the dust settled Bettcher finished his day 1-over par.
After making the turn even with a birdie and a bogey, Norman played to back nine at 3-over and sits in a tie for 22nd place heading into the final round. Calum Masters also finished 3-over for the Trojans after playing the front nine at 3-over and the back nine at even par; he had a pair of birdies on the day and is tied with Vannoy for 27th place.
