Troy Baseball Falls to Michigan State on Final Day of Cox Diamond Invitational
3/6/2016 6:05:00 PM | Baseball
PENSACOLA, Florida – The Troy baseball team closed out the Cox Diamond Invitational with a Sunday afternoon, 3-0, loss to Michigan State at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Â
Troy (8-5) only had seven people reach base safely on the day. Four reached on hits, two drew walks and the other made its way on after getting hit by pitch.
Â
After a three up, three down fourth and fifth inning, Michigan State (8-1) found its way on the scoreboard in the sixth inning and scored all the runs it needed. With one out and a runner at first, back-to-back RBI doubles from Brandon Hughes and Alex Troop gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Following a groundout to second base for the second out of the inning, Troop scored on an infield single from Dan Durkin to complete the scoring for Michigan State.
Â
Troy had its biggest chance in the top of the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out. TJ Binder got it started and pulled a one-out single through the right side, giving him his second hit of the day. He was the only Trojan with a two-hit game. Brandon Lockridge reached base safely getting hit by a pitch and Peyton Fuller walked to load the bases. However, a swinging strikeout and a lineout to left field ended the scoring threat.
Â
Walter Borkovich (3-0) pitched 7.1 innings, only allowed four hits and struck out five in a winning effort. Joe Mockbee came in to close out the game and picked up his second save of the season for the Spartans.
Â
Evan Hebert (1-2) suffered his second straight tough loss on the young season. He pitched six innings allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out one. Robert Harris and Cory Gill made relief appearances in the game. Each pitched an inning, Harris allowed one hit and Gill didn't allow a hit and struck out one.
Â
Lockridge, Binder and Reid Long had the only hits for the Trojans. Lockridge went 1-for-1 with a double, but was thrown out at third trying to pick up his second triple of the season. Binder went 2-for-3 with two singles and Long had a 1-for-2 day at the plate with one walk.
Â
Troy will play two midweek contests again this week, both on the road. The Trojans will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a Tuesday night game with Samford and then travel to Jacksonville State on Wednesday. Both games have a 6 p.m. first pitch start time.
