Pensacola, FLORIDA – The Troy baseball team fell to Southern Miss, 6-2, on Saturday, the second day of the Cox Diamond Invitational, at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Â
Despite trailing 6-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Trojans' (8-4) final out came with the tying run at the plate. Trevor Davis drove in a run with a two-out bases loaded infield single down the line at third base making the game 6-2, but a swinging strikeout put the game at rest. Troy left runners on base to end the ninth, but left 11 stranded throughout the game.
Â
Southern Miss (9-2) plated the first run of the game in the second inning, when Hunter Slater scored on a groundout to second base.Â
Austin Hulsey tied the game at one with a double to left center field that scored Joey Denison, who reached after getting hit by a pitch.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead with one run each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and tacked on two more in the ninth. A runner scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, sandwiched between two solo home runs in the sixth and eighth. Those three runs extended the Southern Miss lead to three putting the score at 4-1. The two runs in the ninth came on a sacrifice fly and a base hit through the left side. Both runs scored in the inning were unearned.
Â
Matt Sanders highlighted the offensive side of the ball for the Trojans and was the only player to record multiple hits with a 2-for-4 performance. Hulsey and pinch hitter, Cameron Sanders, had a double each on the night and were the only two Trojans to have an extra base hit.
Â
Jake Winston (2-0) picked up the win for Southern Miss pitching seven innings, only allowed one run on four hits.
Â
Lucas Brown (2-1) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He pitched 6.1 innings, only allowed on walk and struck out a season high six batters. Marc Skinner and Trey Johns made pitching appearances in relief for Brown.
Â
Troy will close out the Cox Diamond Invitational on Sunday, with an 11 a.m., matchup against Michigan State. The Spartans only loss came to Southern Miss on the first day of the tournament.
