Troy Wins Fifth Straight, Beating No. 75 FGCU

TAMPA – The Troy men's tennis team won its fifth straight match, opening the USF Spring Break Tournament with a 4-2 win over No. 75 Florida Gulf Coast. The win was Troy's eighth in its last nine matches, and the second over FGCU in a week.
Troy (9-10) grabbed its second win of the season over a ranked opponent, and will get a chance at two more this weekend when it takes on No. 65 UNC Wilmington on Saturday and No. 16 USF on Sunday.
Against Florida Gulf Coast (9-5), Troy won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 before coming out on top in singles play, making FGCU 4-2 in its last six matches with both losses coming on neutral courts to Troy.
The Eagles knotted the score in singles play with a win at No. 5 singles, but Andy Lau put Troy back up with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Javier Fernandez at No. 6. Pablo Moreno then win his 10th straight match with a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Ezequiel Cerrini.
FGCU made the score 3-2 with a win at No. 2 singles, but Daniel Bustamante clinched the win for Troy at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, over Ricky Ventura.
Troy now turns its attention to Saturday's match against UNC Wilmington, which will begin at 1 p.m. CT.
