Troy Soccer Opens Spring Play with Win Over Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Alabama - The Troy soccer team opened the spring season on Saturday when they visited Jacksonville State. The Trojans walked away with a 4-0 win over the Gamecocks and got goals from three different players.
Â
"It was nice to finally get out there and play against someone other than ourselves," Jason Hamilton said. "It's been four months since the season wrapped up, and the last six weeks of training had the team amped up and ready to play."
Â
Freshman Brooke McKee opened the scoring just six minutes in to the match, and added a second goal 30 minutes later to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Â
"I thought that we were quite dangerous offensively the entire game," Hamilton said.  "We asked our outside backs to be very involved this game and that gave us good numbers in the attack. Our movement by the front five players seemed to cause them trouble."
Â
Abby Reynolds added to the lead when freshman Lynsey Kelly sprung her free with a pass, Reynolds beat the only defender left and calmly place the ball past the keeper.
Â
Wrapping up the scoring was freshman Alison Watkins, after Brittany Yoder and Haley Roberson worked the ball down the right side line, Yoder whipped in a ball that found Watkins at the back post.
Â
"We asked our team to focus on keeping possession of the ball, and we were able connect 74% of our 411 passes we attempted," Hamilton added. "I would of liked to see attempt more passes, but it is tough when you are having success going forward to get them not to force things."
Â
Sophomore Mikki Lewis and Freshman Sydnay Tucker combined for the shutout, along with the stingy play from the entire Trojan backline.
Â
Saturday's game is the first of seven games the women will play this spring, the team will return to play April 2nd when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to play hosts Western Kentucky as well as Middle Tennessee.
