TROY, Alabama – The two-time defending Sun Belt Conference champion Troy women's golf team will play for the first time as a team this weekend at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
The Trojans enter the spring coming off a successful fall campaign that saw them claim a team title and finish second in another event. Troy finished seventh out of 40 teams in last year's Kiawah Island Spring Classic that is held on two different courses over three days.
The largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the Kiawah Island Spring Classic will feature 41 teams this year. Troy will open play on the Osprey Point course on Sunday before playing the Oak Point course on Monday. The top 20 teams heading into Tuesday's final round will play for the title on the Osprey Point course.
A pair of juniors will lead the Trojans into the spring season as Fátima Fernández Cano and Gabi Oubre' paced Troy in the fall. All eight of their individual rounds counted towards the team card in the fall and the duo accounted for all four of Troy's rounds under par.
Cano led the Trojans with a 72.75 stroke average and three rounds under par. She won the individual title at the Chris Banister Golf Classic, turned in a pair of top 10 finishes and three top 25 performances. Oubre' finished the fall with a 76.13 stroke average and a pair of top 25 finishes, including a tie for ninth at the Chris Banister Golf Classic.
Troy head coach Bart Barnes will turn to a pair of freshmen and an experienced junior to round out his lineup for Kiawah Island. Junior Becca Horner wrapped up the fall with a 78.63 stroke average and has played 60 rounds in her Troy career. Bianca Lohbauer played all eight rounds during the fall and the freshman posted a 78.38 stroke average with 85 percent of her rounds counting toward the team card, while fellow freshman Lindsey Harrison finished the fall with an 80.60 stroke average.
The Trojans enter the spring ranked second in the Sun Belt in the latest Golfstat rankings, while Cano is the top ranked individual in the league and Oubre' ranks seventh.
Troy will be paired with Mercer and Southern Miss in the opening round and the ground is scheduled to tee off at 9:22 a.m. on the back nine.
