KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Fátima Fernández Cano fired a 3-under 69 to lead the Troy women's golf team in Sunday's opening round of the Kiawah Island Spring Classic at the Kiawah Island Golf Club.
Cano quickly raced out to 3-under par after the first six holes as she birdied the 12th, 15th and 16th holes. She made the turn at 2-under and then birdied No. 7 to close out the day with her best round of the season.
The Trojans shot 9-over as a team on Sunday and find themselves just seven shot back of College of Charleston for second place. Chattanooga fired a 5-under in the opening round to take the top spot on the team leaderboard. Troy played the Osprey Point Course on Sunday and will switch to the Oak Point Course for Monday's second round. The top 20 teams in the 41-team field will play the Osprey Point Course for the title on Tuesday.
A trio of Trojans sit tied for 58th place after shooting a 4-over 76 in Sunday's opening round. Lindsey Harrison had three birdies in her round, while Bianca Lohbauer and Becca Horner each had one birdie en route to their cards of 76. Gabi Oubre' made the turn at 1-over, but slipped on the final nine holes and finished her day at 9-over and tied for 140th place.
Cano sits just one shot back of Chattanooga's Emily McLennan and Coastal Carolina's Malene Krolboll Hansen for the individual lead.
Troy will open its second round at 9:22 a.m. on Monday and the Trojans will be paired with Mercer and Southern Miss.
