After successfully leading the Troy women’s golf program to three Sun Belt Conference Championships and four overall appearances in an NCAA Regional, Bart Barnes begins his fourth season as the men's head coach at Troy.
Barnes led the Trojans to a 54-36-2 record last season with Troy turning in a pair of top finishes on the year, including a second-place finish at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. Under Barnes' leadership, Connor Futrell finished the season ranked as the No. 99 individual in the country with a 70.90 stroke average.
During Barnes' tenure coaching the men's team, the Trojans have shot two of the four lowest rounds in school history. Additionally, the lowest 54-hole score total, a 829 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate (par 71) came in the fall of 2019.
Three Trojans have shot a 64 within the last two seasons, two on a par 71 course and Brent Hamm added an 8-under this past fall, while Futrell shot the second-lowest 36-hole score in school history with a 135 in the fall of 2019.
A three-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Barnes led the women’s program to a 354-236-6 record in his four seasons at the helm. He was named the head women’s golf coach in August 2013 after serving as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs for four seasons.
Under Barnes’ leadership, the Trojans rewrote the annals of Troy history. Nine of the top 10 individual rounds, 11 of the top 13 individual 36-hole totals and 11 of the top 13 individual 36-hole totals came during Barnes’ tenure. On the team side, the top 13 single rounds, the top 11 36-hole score totals and 10 of the top 11 54-hole score tallies all came with Barnes as head coach.
The top three career stroke averages (Fátima Fernández Cano, Bianca Lohbauer, Gabi Oubre’) and seven of the top 10 career stroke averages (Becca Horner, Langley Vannoy, Taylor McGraw, Brooke Spinks) all played under Barnes. Cano finished her career with the top three single-season stroke averages in school history, while Lohbauer’s sophomore season ranks as the fourth lowest. All told, Barnes’ golfers hold eight of the top 10 single-season stroke averages in school history.
During Troy’s run to its third Sun Belt championship in four seasons, Cano became the first four-time All-Sun Belt First Team selection in Troy history, while Lohbauer joined her on the All-Sun Belt First Team. The Trojans entered the NCAA Athens Regional with a No. 85 national ranking after a commanding five-shot victory at the Sun Belt Championship. Under Barnes, Troy led at the end of 10-of-12 rounds at the Sun Belt Championship and were in second place at the end of the other two rounds.
Troy won three tournaments during the 2015-16 season -- the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate, Samford Intercollegiate and Chris Banister Golf Classic. Cano was named the Sun Belt Women’s Golfer of the Year and earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Regionals.
The Trojans also won three tournaments during Barnes’ second season as the head coach, including the final two of the year heading into the NCAA South Bend Regional. Troy set school records for lowest round, lowest 36-hole score and lowest 54-hole score. Remarkably, the Trojans fired the top three 54-hole scores in school history, while shooting the top two 36-hole scores (five in the top 10) and four of the top 10 rounds.
Barnes led the Trojans to a No. 82 national ranking and a 12-shot victory over Texas State in the Sun Belt Championship (36 holes). Cano, McGraw and Vannoy were all named to the All-Sun Belt Team, marking the first time in school history three Trojans made the team. The Trojans advanced to play in the NCAA South Bend Regional.
In his first season, Barnes led Troy to the Sun Belt Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA East Regional. The conference title was Troy’s first since moving to Division I in 1993. Barnes also helped tutor then-freshman Cano to the Sun Belt Individual Championship, Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the All-Sun Belt First Team.
Barnes joined the Troy staff in January 2010 following a standout playing career at Middle Tennessee and a stint on the National Golf Association Hooters Tour.
Barnes began his collegiate playing career at Central Alabama Community College where he earned Academic All-America honors before transferring to Middle Tennessee for his final two seasons.
Hailing from Elba, Ala., Barnes received a marketing degree from Middle Tennessee in 2008. Barnes is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sport and fitness management at Troy University and was valedictorian of his graduating class at Elba High School.
