TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team split a doubleheader on Friday's opening day of the Troy Classic at the Troy Softball Complex. Troy knocked off Eastern Illinois, 13-6, in the nightcap, but fell to Ole Miss, 6-1, in the first game.
TROY 1, OLE MISS 6
Ole Miss (5-2) broke open a 2-1 ball game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, Natalie Martinez delivered the big blow in the inning with a 2-run homer.
Troy's (4-2) lone run of the game came in the first inning when Ashley Rainey singled through the right side scoring Hannah Day, who had reached on a single one batter before. Rainey, Day and Stephanie Snyder accounted for all of Troy's offense as they finished with just three hits in the game.
Rainey (3-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans in the circle as she allowed two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Ole Miss took the lead for good in the third inning on an RBI double from Hailey Lunderman and an RBI single from Miranda Strother. Elisha Jahnke picked up the win for the Rebels as she tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
TROY 13, EASTERN ILLINOIS 6
Troy rallied with 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to erase a 6-3 deficit en route to a 13-6 victory over Eastern Illinois in the Trojans' second game of the day.
Hannah Day and Amanda Winters hit back-to-back homers to plate three runs in Troy's four-run fifth inning. Carli Kayler gave the Trojans their first lead of the night with a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run later in the frame.
Day picked up where she left off in the bottom of the sixth with a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Trojans an 11-7 lead. The Trojans (5-2) tacked on two more runs in the frame as Amber Jones doubled to center field to score both Kayler and Ashley Rainey.
Day finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while Rainey, Stephanie Snyder and Kate Benton all had a pair of hits. Rainey (4-2) came out of the bullpen for Troy and held Eastern Illinois to just one run on three hits over three innings to pick up the win.
Eastern Illinois (3-4) raced out to a 5-1 lead with a single run in the first inning and two spots in the third and fourth innings. April Markowski led the Panthers with a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Katie Watson drove in three runs.
Kaylee Hussey started the Troy comeback in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double – the first of her collegiate career – to cut the EIU lead down to 5-3.
Jessica Wireman (3-4) suffered the loss for EIU after she allowed six runs – five earned – on three hits in 1.1 innings of work; she walked two and struck out one.
