Troy Softball Splits Games in Doubleheader Against Marshall and Alabama State

TROY, Alabama – The Troy softball team split in Sunday's doubleheader against Marshall and Alabama State at the Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans lost the first game against Marshall, 7-5, in extra innings and won the second game 9-5 against Alabama State.
TROY 5, MARSHALL 7
With two outs and Troy (3-1) down two runs, Carli Kayler came up big with an RBI triple to right field that scored Hannah Day, who reached on a walk. Kayler later scored on a passed ball to the tie the game at five, just before a strikeout ended the inning.
Briana Daiss hit a two-run homer that gave Marshall (2-0) a 7-5 that would eventually seal the victory for the Thundering Herd.
The Trojans surrendered three runs in the top of the first inning, but scored three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Amanda Winters came up big with a two-run blast to left center scoring Becca Hartley, who reached on a walk to cut the deficit to one. Senior Ashley Rainey stepped up to the plate a few batters later with a double that scored Erica Davis to tie the game at three.
Rainey (2-1) suffered the loss for Troy as she pitched 3.2 innings allowing two runs on one hits. The loss for the Trojans was the first for the Trojans in the tournament.
TROY 9, ASU 5
Troy (4-1) came out swinging in the first inning, scoring four runs on two long balls. Hartley led off the game with a solo home run, which is now four on the young season. Kayler came up to the plate three batters later and lifted a three-run blast over the center field wall to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead.
With the Trojans clinging to a 5-3 lead, Hartley and Kayler came up big once again, each with an RBI double. The four run inning gave Troy a 9-3 lead.
Alabama State scattered a few home runs through the game to stay alive with solo shots in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but never took the lead.
Three Trojans had multi-hit games, including Kayler, Hartley and Hannah Day. Hartley and Kayler had a home run each in the game. Hartley drove in two runs and Kayler drove in four.
Rainey (3-1) got the win in the circle as she pitched four innings and faced 16 batters. She gave up three runs on four hits and didn't allow a walk.
Troy is set to host its Troy Classic, which is set to begin on Friday and end on Sunday. The Trojans first game will be against Ole Miss on Friday at 2:30.
