Troy Soccer Shuts Out Austin Peay in Jaguar Classic Opener
9/4/2015 6:54:00 PM | Soccer
MOBILE, Alabama – Chelsey Williams scored a career-high three goals, including the game-winner, as the Troy soccer team shut out Austin Peay, 4-0, in the Jaguar Classic opener on Friday afternoon at The Cage.
Â
Williams is the first player to record a hat trick since Maddie Tieken did it in 2010 against Wofford.
Â
Williams took no time in scoring the first goal for Troy (5-1) as Brooke McKee made a run towards the end line and crossed the ball in to Williams who placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net in the 2nd minute of the match.
Â
McKee had her first career multi-assist game as she found Williams off a cross that gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute.
Â
The final goal from Williams came in the 59th minute as she eluded a defender for a breakaway goal, that she placed past the keeper.
Â
"Playing up top allowed more opportunities to score and the goals just came," Williams said. "We started well, which gave us momentum throughout the game. If we can take that into every game I think it will help us get better and move forward."
Â
Kirsten Rendall scored her first goal of the season in the 38th minute and gave Troy a 3-0 lead. Robyn-Anne Whittaker found Rendall, who took a shot from 35 yards out that went in after hitting the left post.
Â
"I'm extremely happy with how we came out and played," Jason Hamilton said. "We scored two goals in the first 10 minutes. We made some changes and adjustments in our lineups and moved some players around that we thought would help us offensively as well as defensively."
Â
Mikki Lewis (5-1) recorded eight saves in the match and recorded her third shutout this season.
Â
The Trojans outshot Austin Peay (1-3) 21-11, and 14 of Troy's shots landed on goal. Jasmine Fahrnbauer, McKee and Rendall had three shots each in the match. Williams led all players with four shots.
Â
Troy will wrap up play in the Jaguar Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday against South Florida, who made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.
