ย
MACON, Georgia โ The Troy volleyball team posted more kills and a slightly better attack percentage, but it wasn't enough as the Trojans fell to Mercer, 3-1 (25-21, 13-25, 25-21, 28-26), on Tuesday night at Hawkins Arena.
ย
Troy (5-7) posted 56 kills and hit .232 on the night, but was well below its Sun Belt leading blocks per set average and saw Mercer flip the script in that category.ย The Bears had just 45 kills, but hit .231 and posted 11.0 blocks in the match.
ย
Blair Winston led Troy offensively with 20 kills, her second 20-kill effort in the last three matches.ย She was one of three Trojans with double-figure kills as Symone Shaw and Sara Landis each posted 10.ย Leah Causey was just behind with nine kills and a team-high .353 attack percentage.
ย
Defensively, Causey and Darby Griff each had three blocks for a Troy team that posted just 6.0 total team blocks, despite averaging over 2.6 per set entering the match.ย On the backline Ali Dowdall recorded a match-high 24 digs.
ย
Mercer (2-7) won three very tight sets while Troy dominated the lone set it won.ย The match started with a first set that saw Troy hit .440 and Mercer hit .500.ย The score was tied at 19-19, but Mercer scored three straight to take control on its way to a 25-21 win.
ย
The Trojans held the Bears to a match-low .059 attack percentage in the second set and led the entire way, including a 6-1 start, on their way to a dominant, 25-13, win that tied the match.
ย
The Bears committed just two errors in the third set on their way to another 25-21 win.ย Then, the fourth set featured 14 ties, six lead changes and a late Troy rally.
ย
The Trojans were down 23-21, but scored three straight points and seemed poised to force a fifth set with a 24-23 lead.ย Mercer then got two kills and had a match point, at 25-24, that Troy fought off.ย After kills from Shaw and Winston, Troy again had a chance to close out the set with a 26-25 lead, but Mercer scored three straight points, two off of blocks, to take the set, 28-26.
ย
Morgan MacGilvary led Mercer with 13 kills and a .310 attack percentage while Tori Penrod recorded 19 digs.
ย
Troy returns to the court this weekend when it opens Sun Belt play with a pair of matches at Trojan Arena.ย Troy hosts Appalachian State on Friday and Arkansas State on Saturday, both at 6 p.m.
