Troy Wins in Season Opener

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Troy volleyball team opened its season with a convincing win, 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14), over Eastern Kentucky at the Chattanooga Classic on Friday.

Troy (1-0) took an early lead in the first set and held it throughout to take the opening set, 25-23. Eastern Kentucky (0-1), who won 21 matches last season, held a big lead early in the second set and withstood Troy's charge to win 25-23.

"After the first two sets, we settled down and played the way we're capable," Troy head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. "We played really good defense and hit at very high level, putting pressure on their defense to make plays.Â

Eastern Kentucky is a good quality team that won 21 matches last season, and to beat them shows that we are headed in right direction."

After winning the third set, 25-17, Troy closed out the match in style with a 25-14 win in the fourth set. In that final frame, the Trojans hit .435 and held the Colonels to an attack percentage of .091.  Troy's defense was solid throughout the match, holding EKU to an overall attack percentage of .077.  A big part of that was Troy's front line that produced 13.0 total team blocks, led by eight from Darby Griff and seven from transfer Sara Landis.
Offensively, Blair Winston led the Trojans with 16 kills while Symone Shaw posted 14 kills. Â Landis hit .353 with eight kills and just two errors on 17 attempts. Â The Trojans featured two setters in the match as Reina Terry recorded a team-best 27 assists and freshman Alisha Hinrichs recorded 17.
On the Troy back line, libero Ali Dowdall recorded a match-high 24 digs while Winston grabbed the Trojans lone double-double with a career-high 19 digs.

The Trojans return to action on Saturday when they play a pair of matches at the Chattanooga Classic. Troy will first take on host Chattanooga at 11 a.m. CT, and then the Trojans will play Valparaiso at 3:30 p.m. CT.
