Jared Bettcher Opens Play at U.S. Amateur on Monday

TROY, Alabama – Troy junior Jared Bettcher opens play at the 115th U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill. Bettcher will tee off at 1:50 p.m. along with Kyle Jones and Austin Smotherman.
The winner of the U.S. Amateur will receive an invitation to play in all of the majors with the exception of the PGA Championship. The runner-up of the U.S. Amateur Championship will receive an invitation to play in the Masters and U.S. Open.
Bettcher won the qualifier at Deerfield Golf Club in Canton, Miss., with a 2-under 140. The native of Auburn, Ala., has earned All-Sun Belt honors in each of his first two collegiate seasons and holds the Troy school record with a pair of rounds of 7-under 65 last season.
He finished his sophomore season with a 72.69 stroke average over 29 rounds, including Troy's appearance in the NCAA New Haven Regional. Bettcher shot five rounds in the 60s and finished the year with seven rounds under par.
The U.S. Amateur Championship will feature 36 holes of stroke play over Monday and Tuesday for the 312 golfers. The field will be narrowed to 64 following stroke play and the format will switch to match play to decide a champion.
Olympia Fields will join only eight other American clubs - including Winged Foot, Oakland Hills and Cherry Hills - that have hosted the U.S. Open Championship (1928, 2003) the U.S. Senior Open Championship (1997), the PGA Championship (1925, 1961) and the U.S. Amateur Championship (2015).
Bettcher's appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship marks the fourth straight year that a Troy golfer has played in the event. Tolver Dozier, who competed in the 2015 NCAA Championship, played in the 2014 and 2012 U.S. Amateur Championships, while Jake Tucker played in the 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship.
