TROY, Alabama – Following a Sun Belt Conference championship and an NCAA Championships appearance, the Troy men's tennis team has qualified for the prestigious ITA Kick-Off Weekend and will travel to national runner-up Oklahoma for a pair of matches early in the 2016 season.
"It's such an honor to be selected to participate in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend," Troy head coach Scott Kidd said. "The success and hard work from this year's team is evidence of the commitment this team has shown. We are excited about this opportunity and will continue to work hard to take this program to the next level."
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend features 60 teams playing at 15 sites. The No. 1 team at each site will face the No. 4 team, while the No. 2 team will face the No. 3 team. The winners and losers of the two matches will then play. The 15 teams that win both matches at the 15 sites advance to the 2016 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, hosted by Virginia.
Troy is the No. 3 seed at the Oklahoma site and will face the No. 2 seed, UTSA, in its first match. No. 1 seed Oklahoma and No. 4 seed Utah State will face off in the other opening match.
After a 25-7 campaign and an NCAA First Round loss to Florida State, Troy finished the 2015 season ranked No. 63 in the ITA National Team Rankings. That's just one spot behind its first round opponent, UTSA, who finished at No. 62 after an NCAA First Round loss to LSU and a 17-9 record.
Oklahoma finished the season ranked No. 2 in the nation after falling to Virginia in the NCAA Championships title match. The Sooners posted a 29-3 record last season, winning the ITA National Team Indoor Championships along the way.
Utah State finished the season ranked No. 68 after posting an 18-9 overall record and missing out on the NCAA Championships.
The Trojans will be making their second appearance in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Troy traveled to Gainesville, Fla., in 2011 and fell to NC State and UC Santa Barbara.
