TROY, Alabama – The Troy University men's golf team received one of 50 at-large bids into the NCAA Championship field that was revealed Monday morning on The Golf Channel. The Trojans will be the No. 10 seed at the New Haven Regional hosted by Yale at the historic Course at Yale.
The Trojans will be one of 14 teams at the New Haven Regional that runs May 14-16. The top five teams from each of the six regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championships at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
"Going to Yale is pretty exciting," head coach Matt Terry said. "These guys have been working really hard, some of them for four years, to have the opportunity to go to a Regional. We set out the goal last year to make a Regional without having to win the conference title and we were able to accomplish that this year, which is something that is very difficult to do. It means that we played really well all year long and we'll see what we can do when we get there."
Troy finished the year ranked 57th in the nation according to Golfstat, which is the primary tool used by the NCAA selection committee to determine seeding and at-large berths. The Trojans will be making their first postseason appearance since 1995 and second as a Division I member.
"Our guys will be ready to play once we get up there and they are not going to be satisfied with just getting to go a Regional," Terry said. "Our goal is to get out and get ourselves in that field of 30 in south Florida and then anything is possible."
Behind a league-leading four All-Sun Belt golfers, the Trojans finished the year with the best score vs. par in the league (3.90) and the second-lowest stroke average with a 291.07 mark. Jared Bettcher, who competed as an individual at the NCAA Auburn Regional last season, finished third at the Sun Belt Championship and earned All-Sun Belt First Team honors.
"Last year being by myself was weird and I wasn't comfortable at all," Bettcher said. "Now with my team it is going to be a completely different thing. Being there with my team just helps everything; you're playing with everyone and it will be a lot more fun."
The remainder of the field at the New Haven Regional includes Vanderbilt, LSU, South Florida, Oklahoma State, Arkansas San Diego State, Iowa, North Carolina State, Ohio State, North Texas, College of Charleston, Robert Morris and Saint Peter's.
