Series Finale Set for 1pm Sunday
MONROE, Louisiana – The Troy University baseball team couldn't find an answer for ULM starter Trey Setzer, falling 6-2 at Warhawk Field on Saturday.
Setzer struck out seven batters and allowed six hits in eight innings of work as ULM claimed the series. It is the first time Troy has lost a series to the Warhawks in the program's history.
ULM (23-24, 10-13 Sun Belt) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of an RBI ground out from Justin Stawychny and a Troy throwing error. Keelin Rasch singled with one out off Trojan starter Lucas Brown and Kodie Tidwell followed with a double. Stawychny grounded out to third base, scoring Rasch, but a throw to gun down Tidwell at third sailed high allowing the second run to score.
Troy (25-22, 13-10) tied the game in the second on an RBI double from Matt Sanders and an RBI ground out by Shaw Pinnell. Trevin Hall singled to start the inning and scored from first on Sanders' hit.
Setzer would hold the Trojans to just four hits over the next six-plus innings. Josh Leone relieved Setzer in the ninth after the starter walked Nick Masonia and allowed a single to Sanders to start the frame. Then, for the second straight game, Troy grounded into a game-ending double play securing the third save of the season for Leone.
Logan Hill singled in the eighth to extend his reached base streak to 20 games. David Hall singled to start the sixth to stretch his hitting streak to 14 games.
The Warhawks took the lead for good in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Danny Springer. Brown (5-2) was touched up for another run in the sixth. The junior finished the game with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Trojans will look to avoid the series sweep as the teams conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
